Art by Rocky Perkins
Robert Lewis Perkins, a painter originally from South Louisiana currently lives in Panama and specializes in portraits and murals, but still enjoys painting outdoors en plein air.
Mr. Perkins' studies began in the mid-60’s at the Brooklyn Museum School and the Art Student’s League (NYC), before he moved on to the Academie des Beaux-Arts (Paris) and the Palazzo dei Cartelioni (Florence). His time spent studying at the Repin Institute of Russian Academy of Arts (St. Petersburg) had the largest impact on the work he creates today. The focus at the Repin was on solid Academic training drawing and painting exclusively from life. Though Mr. Perkins has studied with many well-known artists in the U.S. and Europe, he still thinks of himself as mostly self-taught.
Mr. Perkins maintained a studio in New York for many years, doing mostly commercial illustration, and traveled the world painting. He
currently maintains a studio in Panama located directly across the Miraflores locks of the Panama Canal at Ciudad Del Saber in Clayton. He devotes a lot of
time studying the art of the Kuna, Embera and Woonan Indians of Panama.
Before moving to Panama, he worked in his studio on the campus of Louisiana State University for 5 years.
