About the Conservatory

The Acadiana Symphony Orchestra's Conservatory of Music was started under the direction of Maestro Xiao-Lu Li in the summer of 1996. The Conservatory was to serve as an establishment to educate and form the musical minds of all ages. Since then, the Conservatory has grown to offer music instruction in all instruments including voice and Suzuki Instruction in violin, viola, cello, piano and flute. We also offer many group instruction classes such as Mommy Sing with Me, Young Voices Class, Beginning Group Guitar, Intro to Piano and Adult Group Violin. The Conservatory is operated by the Director of Education and faculty is made up of ULL graduating students, musicians of the ASO, and local music teachers.

Benefits of attending lessons at the Conservatory


  • Students attend lessons at our ASO offices conveniently located in the Oil Center.


  • Conservatory students are admitted to Acadiana Symphony Orchestra concerts free of charge along with one parent who is also admitted free.


  • Performance opportunities for Conservatory students include Artwalk, Acadiana Mall, ASA Board meetings, semester recitals and honor recitals.


  • Recitals are held at the end of the semester and are generally held at UL Lafayette's Angelle Hall Choral Room.


  • Opportunity to participate in ensembles such as the Youth Orchestra, Preparatory Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Youth Chorale.


  • Benefits of Music Classes & Lessons


  • The College Entrance Examination Board found that students involved in public school music programs scored 107 points higher on the SAT's than students with no participation.


  • Secondary students who participated in band or orchestra reported the lowest lifetime and current use of all substances(alcohol, tobacco, illicit drugs).


  • Arts involvement teaches children many skills necessary to succeed in life, including problem solving and decision making, creating and maintaining confidence and discipline in themselves, the ability to imagine what might be and to accept responsibility for it, teamwork, the development of informed perception, and articulating a vision.
